Politics, Activism, Culture and Fun in Brisbane, Australia.
How will we take over the world and run it ourselves
instead of having to work for the bosses who own everything?
One thing's for sure - we'll need exciting, powerful,
curious and free people on our side, not the boring pseudo-left

Iraq War: "Larvatus Prodeo" debate

Larvatus Prodeo ('Always go Masked') is a Brisbane blog that discusses politics - they are 'left-liberal' (which means they call Australian Prime Minister John Howard and US President George W Bush rude names, but they think that capitalism is here to stay).

I have been debating the Iraq War there , especially on this monster-sized thread called 'Scourging the Surge'.

It's quite interesting to be in a tiny minority there. Most of the commenters on the site assume that the Iraq war was wrong, and when you argue that it was justified, you cop quite a lot of sneering abuse for it.

It's a long, meaty discussion, with 172 comments (so far) over 11 days. If you'd like to see an example of both pro and anti war people having their arguments challenged, instead of both just repeating themselves to people who already agree with them, it's well worth a look.

Andrew, manager at Dick Smith Toombul

Before we got to work, we needed some friendly, smart geeks to help us work out how to feed the guitar signal from the amp directly into the computer, instead of recording it into a mike. Not blowing up the computer while doing this was our secondary goal.

So, off we went to Dick Smith Electronics at Toombul, where we talked to Andrew - that's his picture just above. He showed us why Dick Smith is the place to go - he wasn't exactly sure what we needed, but he was damn sure we could work it out. And we did.

"Consciousness" - Brisbane musician Paul Childers played some music last night, and I helped him record it.

Paul Childers, Brisbane organic slash experimental blues artist - 070106, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Paul Childers is the core of 'Lightbulb', a Brisbane organic/experimental blues project. Last night I did the button-pressing on the computer to help him record a new song called 'Consciousness'.

Click here to visit Lightbulb's myspace page. 'Consciousness' is not on the page yet (as of Sunday January 7th 2007) but you can listen to another song, 'Transition'.

Click here to see Paul Childers' page at LastFm.

Making Music - Paul Childers records 'Consciousness' - 070106, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia-1

Insanely expensive and sophisticated recording equipment - Paul Childers records 'Consciousness', January 6th 2007 - Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

As you can see, we had a highly professional studio and equipment to work with. Not. Paul played the rythym track first, and he recorded it directly into the microphone.

I used 'Audacity', the free digital sound editing program to work with the tracks.

After the rythym track was recorded, we used a dictaphone to record the track onto cassette tape, so that Paul could listen to the rythym while he played the lead track and I recorded it.

Once we had recorded Paul playing the lead track as well, I used Audacity to mix the two tracks together. I did a little bit of adjusting sound levels, and then we exported the song as an MP3 file and burned it onto a CD.

And now a message from odeo.com - Making Music - Paul Childers records 'Consciousness' - 070106, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia-5

And then I uploaded the song to Odeo Studio - and you can listen to it right now if you press 'play' on the player just above. (You'll need Flash installed on your browser).

Enjoy the music.

Creative Commons: Brisbane's Atma Bhajan Band gives away free live acoustic mantra meditation music.

Brisbane's Atma Bhajan band has just released a free album using Creative Commons. The album is called "Sacred Chant Vol 1".

Not ususally my cup of tea, what with being an atheist and all, but they are from Brisbane, and they are giving away free music, which is part of Taking Over.

So to download the album for free, visit pro-Creative Commons site Jamendo by clicking here.

Atma Bhajan's website is here.

Sadaam is like Che? Pro-fascist British MP George Galloway thinks so

George Galloway, the supporter of recently dead fascist Iraqi dictator Sadaam Hussein, has said that:

[P]ictures of Saddam on the gallows would be used like the image of Che that has adorned millions of posters.

The Respect MP said: "The foolishly videotaped pictures of Saddam twisting on a rope fashioned by the illegal occupiers who overthrew him will return to haunt those who directed them."

He said they "would encourage others to take up the sword in decades to come" like images of Che.

Well I am not the sort of left-winger who misses an opportunity. Which of the following pictures of Sadaam would sell better on a T-shirt, do you think?

'Father of the Country'

'The King in Exile'

Both these pictures were produced using the Che-Lectro (TM) image converter.
